Christine, the chair of Mawdesley u3a, discusses forging connections on heritage walks

A group of people standing around outside We planned to run a series of short heritage walks around our local neighbourhoof of between two and three miles, with a focus on the history of our local area.

The aim was to involve members who perhaps wouldn’t normally sign up for a longer walk.

The weather was anything but kind on Tuesday, but undeterred, 16 members braved the elements for a leisurely stroll around Eccleston.

We followed a local trail, visiting St Mary’s Church, the site of original village green, and shared our knowledge about the history of the village.

We even spotted examples of the local sense of humour, including a surprise pair of wellies under a hedge.

Thankfully we had sunshine on Friday, when Joan, one of our members who has lived in Rufford all her life, took us on a walk around another of our neighbouring villages.

We saw Rufford Old Hall, a local National Trust property and heard how the village has changed over her lifetime. Who would have guessed that a small rural village could have had several pubs and so many houses selling ice cream!
