u3a members connected together over science at the 40th Anniversary event with the Royal Institution, the first event for u3a members at the organisation since 2019. u3a member Michaela talks about the event.
For the first time in three years, u3a members explored science at the Royal Institution. The event was a hybrid event, with 130 members attending in person and 95 online.
The first lecture, delivered by Mark Sumner, covered Michael Faraday's invention of the electric motor and the range of developments and research being carried out today.
The second lecture, by Rebecca Smethurst, was on Supermassive Black Holes where she dispelled the myth that they were endless hoovers sucking up everything around them. We learned about the realities and the difficulties associated with them.
The final session comprised a series of scientific demonstrations based on chemistry.
The event will be covered in more detail in the February 2023 issue of Third Age Matters.
