"A patchwork quilt marking the 40th Annviersary of the charity, u3a, is to be revealed in Manchester on 17 June. The quilt showcases the incredible creative skills of u3a members from across the UK.

u3a is a national learning organisation in which those no longer in full time work can come together to develop their interests, make new friends and have fun.

A distinguished panel of judges including our own Stuart Hillard, picked forty designs from more than fifty entries, which truly evoked the benefits of positive ageing and u3a's strapline, 'Learn, Laugh, Live.' The designs range from the beautiful rolling landscape of the South Downs by Liphook u3a's walking group to highly detailed hand-sewn portraits of members of Olton and District u3a giving a positive thumbs up sign. There's also a tree of life by Witney u3a, symobling the knowledge and learning gained by members.

Sam Mauger, chief executive of u3a, said it was really important to the charity that, through collaboration, a permanent record of the amaazing skills of its members was created. 'The 40th Annviersary Quilt is a lasting legacy which I know the next generation of u3a members will appreciate. We wanted to show, through the quilt, that age makes no difference to what you can achieve in life, what you can do, what you can contribute. It is a wonderful way to celebrate four decades of the u3a movement and the amazing opportunities it offers. We are extremely grateful to all at the Whitworth Gallery where the quilt will be revealed on 17 June before going on display at The Blanket Hall, Witney, Oxfordshire in August.'
