The main priority of the Subject Adviser role is to be approachable and responsive to enquiries, offering help to members looking to expand their interest or to set up a group in your subject. Many Advisers also support the growth of their subject more generally in a number of ways, such as organising online talks around their subject, organising tournaments and competitions, or by helping members to connect and network around their interests.

Shri, Subject Adviser for Philosophy, says, ‘I enjoy being able to help and support people, especially within the sphere of learning. People with diverse backgrounds come together, and not only talk to each other with civility, but become friends! To be able to help in doing that, for me, is fantastic’.

Modern Languages Subject Adviser Heather says, ‘Our task as advisers is to help groups do better, whatever they do. I have created leaflets on the u3a Website with advice on how to find a group, start a group, find learning materials, stimulate conversation, deal with mixed abilities and use Zoom for language exchange.’

If you’d like to be a Subject Adviser for any of these subjects – or one that is not currently covered - please email the Volunteering Officer at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information.
