Get involved in u3a Eye

We are running a rolling photography project to encourage members to take and submit pictures of their surroundings. We post a different theme every two months and invite you to submit your photo on that topic.

This is not a competition and it is not only about your photographic skill – we are looking for any interesting photos and interpretations of the theme. Anything which has captured your imagination or caught your eye.

At the end of every deadline, we will choose and publish up to 15 photos in the online gallery below.

Please only submit one photo per person, per theme. Your photo should also not include any people.

This time, we are looking for your best and most interesting photos on the theme of 'Reversed'.

Judges pick based not only on the quality of the image but also on the interpretation of the theme.

We are now opening each theme for submissions for two months.

Deadline for submissions: 12 midday on Thursday 20 November 2025.

To help you plan ahead, the theme for December and January is 'Trickery'.

Fragments

To me the word 'fragments' suggests something hard, brittle and easily smashed. So with that in mind I was prepared to sacrifice a blank CD and use natural light from a large window to show off the beautiful spectrum.

Fragments of Glass

This image of the nativity, photographed in Église Notre-Dame de Royan, France, was created in 1958, from fragments of coloured glass, by Henri Martin-Granel, and is part of a set of panels in the Cathedral, telling the nativity story. Royan was almost totally destroyed by the Allies in 1945, and was rebuilt with many modern buildings, including the Cathedral, Casino, Market Hall and “Front de Mer”

Chateau Guildo

Chateau Guildo, in northern Brittany, dates from the 13th century. It was attacked, partially destroyed and rebuilt several times over the following centuries. Between 1590 and 1598, during the French Wars of Religion, the chateau was besieged several times. It was damaged so much that it was gradually abandoned and left to fall to ruin. Now just fragments remain but it is an wonderful site to visit for anyone interested in history and/or photography.

Fragments in Time

I used Time Value mode to set the shutter speed to 4 seconds. I was pleased with the result which showed the ticking second hand moving through the fragments of time.

Each of these fragments has its own story to tell, but, after the more significant pieces have been lavishly displayed, these were simply gathered together in a glass box near the exit to Pompeii.

Brown leaf on white paint

I was just about to sweep up the flakes of paint that I had scraped off the wall in order to repaint it when I realized that moving them into a rectangular shape might qualify for the theme of fragments. By chance a leaf was blown onto the flakes, which created some interesting contrast. To intensify that contrast I faded the yellow tones of the paint flakes.

A puzzling problem.

This photograph came about from a visit to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens with the U3A Photography Group some time ago. I took advantage of this very lively peacock while it stood still for a few seconds. You can see I have converted my photo into a jigsaw puzzle, but will the fragments complete the puzzle?

Skiing by numbers

Many years ago I undertook a project to take unusual photographs of the numbers 1 to 100. At the time I was also experimenting with a Windows photo mosaic generator. This picture is based on a photo that I took of my nine year old son on a skiing holiday. A striking image, despite its fragmentary nature.

I took this photograph on a recent trip to Svalbard. The sea was so blue and the fragments of ice that had broken off the glacier floating around the Sound was a most spectacular sight.
