We visited Kagga Kamma on the edge of the Cederberg in December, a three hours drive from Cape Town. Our lodgings overlooked the Tankwa Karoo, an otherworldly and uninhabited semi-arid desert region. Suddenly, as we were out walking, the sky opened and shafts of light were cast in the distance highlighting the unusual rock formations and sheer beauty of the surroundings. Ten minutes later they were gone. We enjoyed our moment of serendipity.

I took this photo at a Durham Lumiere. It was a giant illuminated structure, around 5m tall, in the form of a "slinky" pouring off a building. The brightness of the colours almost makes the background completely black, so it stands out well.

I was captivated by the sunlight being reflected on these tiny raindrops . I'd like to think this grass flower-head was making its own contribution to the Christmas seasonal festivities at our local RHS garden, where I took the photo.

An evening photoshoot around the shore at Dawlish Warren finished up on the local railway station. I wanted to capture an image of the through train at speed and this shot worked perfectly. I was particularly pleased with the stillness and quiet of the background of the station while evoking the sense of speed.

Eilean Donan Castle is probably one of the most photographed castles in the country. I was lucky enough to be there just as the sun was setting and the flood lights came on to illuminate the castle.

The recent Plymstock & District u3a visit to the Lost Gardens of Heligan ' Night Garden' light show was astounding. There were numerous photographic opportunities walking through the gardens and woodland, but the umbrellas especially caught my eye as an unusual and colourful photograph.
