A Grey heron (Ardea cinerea). The beautiful and extravagant plumage of the heron becomes apparant, as it unfolds it's wings and reaches for the sky.

This brightly coloured python was a must to photograph. It was just unfolding itself from the branch where it had been resting.

This was my mother’s fan which now resides in my junk drawer waiting to be unfolded and refolded by myself as a youngster and now my grandchildren. It’s a wonder! It looks so fragile and yet has survived many years of unfolding delight!

Sunflowers are amazing works of nature. This one was in a local sunflower field captured on a photography outing.

Wild Garlic unfolds in the woodland

A Fern frond uncurling and producing a new leaf. I was inspired to take the photo because of the detail in the plant including the minute hairs. I think black and white shows more details of the frond.

The theme of unfolding was very challenging to meet accurately in 1 image, since unfolding implies movement. I tried time lapse images of plants opening up with little success. I then decided to manually unfold a piece of paper which gave me much more control. This simple aeroplane was the first thing I ever folded over 60 years ago. I thought it very handy that I could use it now to make something for a current challenge.

This Triptych of an old paper Chinese umbrella unfolding shows an image handpainted on paper, on an umbrella constructed from wood, paper and string. I think the painted images are lovely, and unfold as the umbrella unfolds!

I just stopped for a break and got my map out and though I’m unfolding it and so is the view. I took one on my iPhone and one on my SLR but the colour looked better on the phone

The exciting promise of more of these beautiful flowers coming into bloom in my garden pond was my inspiration for this photo.

Our group went to visit the local sunflowers fields and this just caught my eye, more interesting than the full blown flower I thought.

I tried to capture the soft delicate unfolding of a small silk painting as it fell downwards - and after removing the background, and a little editing, was surprised to see it had taken on a new life and now resembled a chrysalis !

The unfolding light captured inside the Sagrada Família in Barcelona. A truly magical experience when the changing outside light filters through the stained glass windows and dances on the walls and ceilings.

This is the unusual roof shape of the apartments near the sea front in Westward Ho! Some of these roofs and balconies were damaged by the winds of a recent storm. Unusually the winds were from the East and probably the reason for the damage as these apartments are facing straight into normal westerlies, that come straight of the Atlantic.

The challenge for our field trip at Brodsworth Hall, Doncaster had been 'spirals' but I thought this image equally represented the unfolding of spring.
