Get involved in u3a Eye

We are running a rolling photography project to encourage members to take and submit pictures of their surroundings. We post a different theme every two months and invite you to submit your photo on that topic.

This is not a competition and it is not only about your photographic skill – we are looking for any interesting photos and interpretations of the theme. Anything which has captured your imagination or caught your eye.

At the end of every deadline, we will choose and publish up to 15 photos in the online gallery below.

Please only submit one photo per person, per theme. Your photo should also not include any people.

This time, we are looking for your best and most interesting photos on the theme of 'Small'.

Judges pick based not only on the quality of the image but also on the interpretation of the theme.

We are now opening each theme for submissions for two months.

Deadline for submissions: 12pm on Thursday 26th September 2024

Perspectives of Bath

This photo was taken on a recent visit to the Holburne Museum in Bath, and shows the view from the first floor gallery looking up Great Pulteney Street. The grandeur of the architecture is accentuated by the perspective of the composition and the symmetry of the image.

Basking in the sunshine giving the impression that is is bigger than it really is.

Perspective of planes

I took this photo last month whilst descending an escalator which had a reflective, sloping ceiling. The composition has a strong reference to the “thirds” which significantly enhances the perspective of the image.

A rolling hill of rows of lavender growing

The Lavender Lanes

Beautiful lanes of lavender at the Lavender farm in Kinross, Scotland. The lanes recede into the hillside which give a good sense of perspective. The perfume that day attracted lots of bees and was a different use of the farmland.

Tunnel Vision

This is one of the tunnels inside the walls of Cardiff Castle. They were built by Lord Bute as galleries, so he could still take his daily exercise even in bad weather. They were used as air-raid shelters in World War II, and could accommodate nearly 2,000 people. (Information from 'The Essential Cardiff Castle', Matthew Williams)

Not as far as you think

I was visiting the Imperial War Museum in London and this grabbed my attention because, when you first look at it, it is not immediately apparent what it is. It is in fact a stairwell, taken from the fifth floor, with white glass panels hiding most of the stairs and giving the picture an increased sense of perspective.

Kinderdijk

Kinderdijk in southern Holland is known for its 18th century windmills. This water management network features 19 mills and 3 pumping stations, plus dikes and reservoirs that control flooding in the low-lying land. The photograph captures the perspective of the lines of windmills, canals and pathway leading into the distance.

I thought the idea of reducing a large car down to toy proportions so it appears to fit on grandsons skate board would be fun. And it was, after a lot of “left a bit”, “back a bit”, “a little more”…

New Amidst The Old

Showing the juxtaposition of new buildings amidst the old ones and the perspective makes the foreground larger that the background. Long exposure to smooth out the water and to streak the clouds.

The library at A la Ronde, Devon

The house of A la Ronde is 16 sided which means some rooms are wedge shaped. The wedge shape of the room exaggerates the perspective of the library.

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, also known as the Holocaust Memorial, is a memorial in Berlin to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. It consists of a 1.9-hectare site covered with 2,711 concrete slabs or "stelae", arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping field.
